Binasal Airway CPAP for transport

Maintaining the short CPAP prongs in the nares of infants with respiratory distress during Angel transport has been problematic. Therefore, Neotech Binasal Airway nasopharyngeal prongs are currently being used for the occasional baby who is transported on CPAP. These prongs come in 4 sizes (2.5, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0); there is a chart on each package to facilitate selection of the appropriate size based on the baby’s weight. Lubrication of the prongs will facilitate placement. The prongs should not be cut or shortened for use.

These silicone nasopharngeal prongs are intended for use only during transport and are replaced with Aladdin or short argyle CPAP prongs upon arrival in the NICU if CPAP is to continue to be used as a therapeutic modality.

Discussed and approved at Nursery Policy & Procedure Meeting 7/18/01. Revisited at the Regionalization and Transport meeting 12/19/01.
