Quiet Time
Beginning December 1, 2002, the Vanderbilt NICU rooms will observe a quiet hour between 3 - 4 pm daily. This time is anticipated to be developmentally friendly for the neonates and mentally soothing for both parents and staff alike. During quiet hour, the overhead lights will be dimmed; and faint harp music will be played (via recently installed CD players) in the background. Signs will be posted encouraging everyone to whisper. Phones should not ring into the nursery, except in emergency situations. Although medical and nursing care will have to proceed as clinically indicated, noisy elective activities should be postponed; infants should be allowed to rest quietly as much as possible. Parents are encouraged to visit and perform kangaroo care during this time.
