ROP: Laser photocoagulation for threshold ROP

Laser photocoagulation should be performed within 48 – 72 hours of the diagnosis of threshold ROP.

Laser surgery may be performed in the ECMO room if it is available. An empty delivery room may be used if the ECMO room is occupied. Participants in the infant’s care during laser surgery MUST wear appropriate eye protection. Otherwise, there are no specific training requirements, and the patient’s bedside nurse may be called upon to assist the ophthalmologist during the procedure.

Infants undergoing laser surgery will receive fentanyl and may or may not be electively intubated. If the infant is not intubated for the procedure, someone capable of intubating the infant in an emergency must be readily available during the procedure.

Resolved at the NICU Policy & Procedure Meeting 6/21/00.
